Root & install TWRP recovery on Moto G 3rd Gen (2015). The well known and senior Xda developer squid2 has recently developed the famous TWRP custom recovery for Moto G 3rd Gen smartphone. In this article we’ll see a detailed step by step procedure on how to Root & install TWRP recovery on Moto G 3rd Gen (2015).
I recommend to use every single step given below at you own risk. If by mistake any damage happens to your Moto G 3rd Gen (2015) then neither do I nor the developers will be responsible for that. Download Files:

  1. Download ADB and Fastboot setup.
  1. Download TWRP.img for Moto G 3rd Gen (2015).
  1. Download Updated Super SU for Moto G 3rd Gen (2015).

Pre-Requisites:

  • This procedure will void your device warranty. But if you want to regain it back then you can do that by un-rooting your Moto G 3rd Gen (2015).
  • Make sure you have charged your Moto G 3rd Gen at least up to 60% so as to avoid any power issues during the process.
  • Backup your contacts, messages, notes, call logs and apps etc. for safety.
  • Make sure your computer has Motorola mobile specific USB drivers installed in it. This is must so as to detect the phone when connected to computer. You can manually install the drivers from the link given below.

  • You must unlock bootloader of your phone before proceeding further. Refer our guide to unlock bootloader:

  • Make sure that you’ve enabled the OEM Unlock mode on your phone. If not, then do so by following the path Menu->Settings->Developer options ->OEM Unlock. If you can’t see Developer option then go to Settings->About Phone and tap 7 times on the Build number. This will appear the Developer option in the Settings menu.

  • Also enable the USB Debugging mode on your device by following the path: Menu->Settings->Developer options->USB Debugging.

Procedure to Install TWRP on Moto G 3rd Gen (2015):

Step 1: Download and install the ADB and Fatsboot setup on your computer.
Step 2: Also download the TWRP.img file. Copy this file to the location C:\Program Files\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder (where you’ve installed the adb and fastboot).
Step 3: So you’ll have these files in the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder:

Step 4: Now connect your Moto G 3 to the computer using micro USB cable.
Step 5: Now go to the C:\Program Files\Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder, hold Shift button and right mouse click on an empty space. You’ll see a list of options from which select Open command window here option. This will launch the command prompt window on your computer.

Step 6: Now to ensure that your Moto G 3rd Gen is properly connected to your computer or not, type the following commands in the command window and press enter:
adb devices
As soon as you press enter key, you’ll see a message saying ‘List of devices attached’ along with random numbers. This will confirm that your phone has properly connected to computer.

Note: If such thing doesn’t happen, then re-install device drivers (link given in pre-requisites), enable USB debugging mode and try again.
Step 7: Now you need to boot your phone in fastboot mode. For that type the following command in the command window and press enter:
adb reboot bootloader

As soon as you press enter key, your Moto G 3rd Gen will boot into fastboot mode as shown below:

Step 8: You can check whether fastboot is functional or not by typing the following command in the command window and press enter:
fastboot devices
Some random number along with ‘List of devices attached’ message will prove that fastboot is functional.

Step 9: Now let’s flash the TWRP custom recovery. For that type the following command and press enter key:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
As you press enter, the TWRP recovery will get flashed. It will hardly take few seconds to flash. Refer the screenshot:

After flashing, your phone will automatically boot into TWRP recovery.
That’s it! You’ve successfully flashed the TWRP custom recovery on Moto G 3rd Gen (2015) smartphone. You can use this recovery to flash custom ROMs, root your phone, flash kernel, mods, take nandroid backup and much more.

Procedure to Root Moto G 3rd Gen (2015):

Step 1: Download and copy the Updated Super SU zip file on your phones internal storage. Remember not to extract this zip file.
Step 2: Now you need to boot your phone into fastboot mode. For that firstly switch off your phone. Then press and hold Volume down key + Power button simultaneously until you land into fastboot mode. As shown above you can even use the command window for booting into fastboot mode.
Step 3: As you enter the TWRP recovery you’ll be asked to modify the system partitions or not. So just swipe to the right side to allow modifications.

Step 4: Now you need to flash the Updated Super SU zip file which we’ve copied earlier. So press on the Install option.

Step 5: As you click on it, you’ll see all the files and folders located on phones internal storage. Just navigate to the Updated Super SU zip file and select it.

Step 6: On the next screen just swipe to start the actual Rooting process. Wait and be patient until it completes successfully.

Step 7: After completion, you’ll see the successful message on the screen.

Step 8: After completing everything as mentioned above, restart your device by selecting the Reboot option present on the recovery mode itself. It will take more time to start than usual.
